Harry Potter is the protagonist of J. K. Rowling's seven-book Harry Potter series. Born on 31 July 1980 in Britain, he was orphaned as an infant when Lord Voldemort killed his parents, James and Lily, and he was raised by his aunt, uncle and cousin, the Dursleys, who treated him cruelly. On his eleventh birthday he learns he is a wizard and starts at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

He is known for being sorted into Gryffindor, for his friendship with Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, and for the long fight against Voldemort that runs through the series. Headmaster Albus Dumbledore guides him for much of it, and the books follow him as he grows from a lonely boy into the hero who must face Voldemort. Daniel Radcliffe played him in all eight films.
