Gandalf is the wizard of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, one of the Istari sent to Middle-earth in the Third Age to oppose Sauron. He arrives as Gandalf the Grey, a traveller of great knowledge who works mostly by encouraging and persuading. Ian McKellen played him in the film adaptations.

He is known for leading the Company of the Ring and for recruiting Bilbo Baggins for the quest to reclaim the Lonely Mountain from Smaug. He carries the staff and the sword Glamdring, and he holds that the One Ring must be destroyed. He keeps a special attachment to hobbits and often goes to the Shire to rest.
