Pikachu is the Electric-type Pokémon mascot of the Pokémon franchise, a small yellow mouse with red cheek sacs that generate electricity. Created by Atsuko Nishida, with its design finalized by Ken Sugimori, it first appeared in Pokémon Red and Green in Japan in 1996. In the anime that began in 1997, Professor Oak gave it to Ash Ketchum, and it became his partner from the very first episode.

Pikachu is best known as Ash's best friend and longest-standing partner, and it is widely regarded as the most recognizable Pokémon. It is determined and refuses to give up in tough spots, and it has chosen to stay in its current form rather than evolve. It also looks after younger Pokémon, acts like a big brother to Togepi, and takes charge when Ash is away.
