The Daily Prophet is the wizarding newspaper of Great Britain, the main source of news for British and Irish wizards and the most widely read paper in the wizarding world. It is published every morning, with an Evening Prophet edition rushed out for big stories and a Sunday issue, and it is delivered by owl to nearly every household in Britain from its headquarters in Diagon Alley. Quidditch Through the Ages cites its coverage back to 1883, and in the 1990s its editor was Barnabas Cuffe.

The paper is known for news, competitions and features, from Ministry scandals and Quidditch league tables to a Problem Page and society gossip. It is also known for sensationalism, a close and often compromised relationship with the Ministry of Magic, and its star reporter Rita Skeeter. Its name is a homonym of profit, and its cover price rose from five Knuts to seven over the early books, which tells you something about what it cares about most.

The person who ends up texting the Prophet is usually someone who wants a brisk, confident take on the day, a bit of wizarding history, or a headline
