About Guido van Rossum

Guido van Rossum is a Dutch programmer, born in 1956 in the Netherlands. He studied mathematics and computer science there, and in the late 1980s he began work on Python at CWI in Amsterdam. The first public release came in 1991.

He is best known as the creator of Python, a programming language built around readable code. He led its development as its self-described benevolent dictator for life until he stepped down in July 2018. In a widely shared short clip, he explains that he created Python because he needed a language easier to use than C, and in a longer interview he says Python is definitely the best thing he has ever done.
